February's Events
On the first Friday of the month we have a literature table outside M & S. On Friday 3rd February it was one of the quietest days we have ever had but we had one good conversation at the end.
"Do not let your heart envy sinners,
But be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day;
For surely there is a hereafter,
And your hope will not be cut off."
You can hear this sermon at http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?dbzyfbyy318q8af
On the 19th February Jonathan Bayes preached on the "mercy package" from Psalm 36 v 5, 6
Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like the great mountains;
Your judgments are a great deep;
O Lord, You preserve man and beast.
On Sunday 12th February Nick Garrity spoke on where does faith come from, why do some believe and not others?
2 Thessalonians 2 v 13 "But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth"
Gareth Crossley on Sunday 5th February spoke on Christ the Rock from Exodus 17 and Number 20
"and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ." 1 Corinthians10 v 4

Family Business
On Sunday 23rd October Graham Swift from the Grace Fellowship spoke on "Family Business" from Luke 10 v38 -42 and John 11 regarding Mary and Martha.
1. Family Hospitality. "Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house." He stressed the need to make people feel welcomed to the fellowship
2. Family differences - There was disagreement between Martha and Mary but "...Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
3. Family loss -Mary & Martha lost their brother Lazarus and we were reminded of the hope of the Resurrection "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live." John 11v 25 and the need to trust in Jesus Christ.

The woman who came face to face with the man who made the universe
Erroll Hulse from Leeds Reformed Baptist Church spoke on John 4 - The Samaritan Woman who came face to face with the man who made the universe.
Lord immediately talked to her about living water
"Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water"
Erroll reminded us of the uniqueness of Jesus' position as prophet. He knew that the woman was cohabiting, which the Bible says is sinful. Unless we deal with the subject of sin we are not dealing with the Good News. Good News is for sinners.
This woman had a one to one experience with Jesus. If we become a christians we need to see Jesus face to face and believe in him. This Samaritan woman leaves her water pot behind (which was very valuable) and went to tell others about Jesus.
God brought about a revival through one woman.

Watch and Pray
Frederick Hodgson from Whitby Evangelical Church took the service on 8th October and spoke on "watch and pray" from the sermon of the mount in Matthew 7
We are to watch ourselves:
v1 & 2 "Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged;
We are to watch we are not naive
v6 "Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces."
Watch out for false teachers:
v15“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
We do this by recognizing their fruit
We were challenged about what we are going to do with God's words, whether we are going to do them like the wise man that built his house on the rock or not obey them like foolish man.

Are you blessed?
Frederick Hodgson from Whitby Evangelical Church spoke on the beatitudes from Matthew chapter 5
3 “ Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.
The word "blessed" is used nine times. Are you blessed? Are you part of that Kingdom? There is a kingdom and therefore there must be a king. Jesus is the king, is he your king? The beatitudes are a manifesto of the kingdom.
If Jesus Christ announces you blessed you are blessed indeed, as he died for us, intercedes for us, is the same yesterday, today and forever. He came to rescue us and make us part of the kingdom.

Reaping & Sowing
William Horsburgh from Ryedale Evangelical church spoke on Proverbs chapter 10 and reminded us in the New Testament that the Apostle Paul wrote:
"Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Gal 6 v , 7 and 8
In the christian life you reap what you sow, your growth has consequences. It's cause and effect.
There are long term consequences
Prov 10 v25 When the whirlwind passes by, the wicked is no more,
But the righteous has an everlasting foundation.
The foundation is Christ not what I've done, not my works but Christ's work and God's grace
Prov 10 v27 The fear of the LORD prolongs days,
But the years of the wicked will be shortened.
The choices you make will have consequences. If we are careless in the christian life this will result in us not enjoying the benefits in Christ.

Plea to be Reconciled to God
Steve Harding from Hambleton Evangelical Church, Thirsk spoke on Paul's letter to the Colossians chapter 1 v 19 to 23
For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight— if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.
He spoke on a "personal plea to be reconciled to God"
The church at Colosse had false teachers who said there were extra things you need if you want to become a good christian for example circumcision and that Christ alone was not enough. He reminded us that we have to be aware of such people and that in these verses Paul gives us clarity how we are to withstand these people.
God has reconciled us to himself through the death of his son.
Friendship has been restored v21. That you were enemies and have been restored. God has made peace by Christ shedding his blood on the cross.
He urged us to get right with God. It is Christ who has died for the ungodly.
His work on the cross at Calvary is complete.
We are to share the Good news with others and he has given us a ministry of reconciliation.

Why?
Dr Jonathan Bayes from Hambleton Evangelical Church spoke on Psalm 22. This Psalm of David refers to Jesus Christ
and is quoted in the Gospels:
"My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”Matthew 27:45
“ They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots" Matthew 27:35
"I thirst" John 19 v 28 which corresponds to v 15 of the Psalm
"My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And My tongue clings to My jaws;
You have brought Me to the dust of death. "
why was he forsaken?
Why this suffering?
v22 -31 of the Psalm is a note of victory
All nations, all families, all ranks of people will turn to the LORD (v27)
God has highly exalted him and every knee will bow (v28)
His righteousness is his gift. The ticket we need to come into the Kingdom. Jesus is the righteous one and as he died on the cross for sinners, in exchange for our sins he gives us his righteousness.
The cry in a loud voice in Gospels "It is finished" is the language of v 31 of the Psalm "That He has done this" His work is complete all we do is receive it.

The New Birth
Derek Carr from Barton Evangelical Church preached on the new birth from John 3.
He reminded us that John 20 v 31 "but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name"
is key to understanding John's Gospel and that this" life in His name" is the new birth. He spoke on what is the new birth and what does it imply. The new birth is a work of God's Spirit and it is out of our control. John 3 v 8:
"The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit" It is both unpredictable and uncontrollable.
There is no other way to enter the kingdom of God, "Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God"
